Most valley cities lean toward one port. Federal Way does not - I-5 exits 142B and 143 put a driver within roughly 20 minutes of both Seattle and Tacoma terminals, and SR-18 connects east to Auburn and the pass.
That matters on a bad gate day. If Terminal 18 is running long and the same steamship line has a box available in Tacoma, the delivery still happens on time. We plan against whichever terminal is actually moving.
Smaller receivers, mixed freight
Federal Way's industrial pockets along Pacific Highway South and Enchanted Parkway have more small and mid-size receivers than the Kent Valley does, and plenty of them cannot take a 40' container on a chassis at all. For those we strip the container at our Kent warehouse, 20 minutes north, and deliver on a 26' box truck with a liftgate or a dry van instead.
That is a decision worth making before the container leaves the port, not after a truck is turned away at a dock. Dispatch asks the question up front.

Which port will my Federal Way container come from?
Whichever one is moving. Terminal 18 in Seattle and Husky in Tacoma are each about 20 minutes away on I-5, so if one terminal is running long and the line has a box available at the other, we plan against the gate that is actually working.
My receiver has no dock. Can you still deliver?
Yes. We strip the container at our Kent warehouse, 20 minutes north, and deliver on a 26 foot box truck with a liftgate. Tell dispatch when you book so the transload is planned rather than improvised.
Do you cover the rest of the south corridor?
Yes - Kent, Auburn, Sumner, Puyallup, and Fife run on the same board, and freight continuing beyond the Puget Sound moves on our own long-haul fleet.
