Auburn takes ocean containers off Seattle and Tacoma like the rest of the valley, but it also has rail. The BNSF yard in Auburn puts intermodal boxes on the ground in the same city as the warehouses, and we work both sides: a container off Terminal 18 and a container off the ramp are the same move to our dispatch.
SR-18 is the other half of the story. It connects Auburn to I-5 west and I-90 east, so freight that lands in a Puget Sound terminal and continues over Snoqualmie Pass often gets its first inland stop here.
Running the West Valley strip
The warehouse corridor along C Street SW and 15th Street NW takes containers all day, and dock schedules there are tight. We book the terminal appointment against the receiver's window and confirm the container is released and free of holds before a driver rolls, so the truck is not sitting at a gate while the delivery slot expires.
Auburn is about 25 minutes from our Kent warehouse on SR-167 and West Valley Highway. If an Auburn dock is full, the freight can be stripped and held at our building instead of going back to the port.

Do you pull containers off the BNSF yard in Auburn?
Yes. Rail drayage to and from the BNSF and UP ramps runs on the same board as our ocean container work, and for an Auburn receiver a ramp pull is often a shorter move than a port run.
Can freight continue east over the pass after an Auburn stop?
That is a common lane. SR-18 puts Auburn onto I-90, and we run our own dry van, reefer, and open deck on long-haul, so a container can be stripped in the valley and the freight continue east without changing carriers.
What if the Auburn dock cannot take a 40 foot container?
We transload at our Kent warehouse, about 25 minutes north, and deliver on a dry van or a box truck instead. It is worth deciding that before the container leaves the port rather than after a truck is turned away.
